Enhance your Art

Color Temperature, is a measure in degrees Kelvin that indicates the appearance of a source.

If a steel rod were placed into a fire it would first turn red, then orange as it heats up, until it finally turns bluish white. The temperatures of the rod and the color at each temperature describe the color of a source. It may sound like a contradiction, but low color temperature lamps have more red wavelengths, thus creating a warm feeling. High color temperature lamps have more blue wavelengths creating a cool feeling. Robert Hogarth

We supplied lights for both Paintings below - The 'American Fireships' had an LED bulb of 3150 Kelvin giving a warm color to enhance the paintings red color rendition - The lower painting being a cold Blue/Gray Marine composition had an LED of 5500 Kelvin to enhance the cooler colors.

‘American fireships on the Hudson’ by Dominic Serres

16 August 1776:‘American fireships on the Hudson’. This painting features the enemy attack with fireships on HMS Phoenix. The Phoenix became entangled, but Hyde Parker II managed to douse the flames sufficiently to escape with his force to New York. Painted in 1777.

‘The Passage of the Hudson River’ by Dominic Serres

October 1776:‘Forcing the Boom on the Hudson River’. The Phoenix is shown with the frigates Tartar and Roebuck breaking through the enemy's defensive boom and returning fire from Forts Washington and Lee. Painted in 1779.

Both paintings required an individual light source to ensure the illumination was in harmony and to enhance the color pigments.

Picture lights powered by Dichroic, Halogen or Incandescent bulbs could never illuminate both paintings to the best effect from one type of Picture Light.

We have recently been commissioned to supply and install 10 lights for paintings at Ironmongers Hall, Barbican, London Our new LED light was finished to the same color as the panelling to try and hide the light – note there is no overspill of light onto the top of the frame, unlike conventional bulbs that burn filaments our LED emit electrons to evenly cover the canvas with illumination.

Details from the above painting - See your paintings in the correct light. The picture light for this painting had our standard 3150 Kelvin LEDs.

We do not normally include references from customers that use our lights but the following email from Mr Don Edvalson (Gainesville, FL) was a delight to receive and hence we have added it with his approval.

Hi, I recieved my lights several weeks ago, but due to a very busy schedule just got them installed today.

The 5500 K on my Lassen Paintings is awesome. The paintings almost look as though they are back lit. I am really glad that you were able to get the very cold light for us, it looks great. I would strongly recommend these cold LEDs to anyone who has Lassen (or other sea creature) art.

When the room lighting is on (incandescent) the pictures still glow because they are so cold. When the room is dark, the paintings are absolutely amazing.

I am going to contact Dianne Lassen (the sister of the artist, and his sales manager) and recommend your lights to her for all of her customers.

Thanks for a great product.
