Drambuie Collection

Hogarth Lighting has supplied lights for this magnificent collection.

FOR generations the name Drambuie, the whisky liqueur made from a secret recipe, has been synonymous with the finer things of life. Legend has it that the recipe, which is still a closely guarded secret, was handed personally by Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) to Captain John MacKinnon as a token of thanks for helping the prince to escape after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in April, 1746 - the last land battle fought in Britain.

What is not a secret is the fact that over the years the Drambuie company assembled a magnificent collection of Scottish art. The collection, comprising 158 paintings, which include works by Samuel John Peploe (1871-1935), arguably the finest of the four Scottish Colourists, William McTaggart (1835-1910), the Kintyre-born painter who came to be regarded as the finest landscape painter of his time, and Alexander Nasmyth (1758-1840), who was born in Edinburgh, and is perhaps best remembered for his portrait of Robert Burns, which is in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh. It is, however, his magnificent landscape work which is highlighted in the Drambuie Collection.
